Bridging Cultures, Brewing Friendships: A Cross-Cultural Glimpse into Indonesia at LEX Hippo HQ

By: Kenshi Suzuki

On Tuesday, June 10th, the LEX Hippo Headquarters in Japan became a vibrant hub of cross-cultural exchange, sparked by an exciting representative meeting focused on Indonesia. As we gathered to discuss upcoming programs—particularly the much-anticipated Bali Language & Culture Exchange and the adventurous Dragon Exploration on Komodo Island—what unfolded was more than a simple itinerary planning session. It became a beautiful encounter of worlds, languages, and shared values.

Through my presentation, I had the opportunity to introduce Indonesia not merely as a destination but as a living, breathing mosaic of cultures and tongues. Indonesia is a country of over 17,000 islands and more than 700 living languages, where multilingualism is not a choice but a way of life. In daily conversations, it is common to hear a seamless mix of Bahasa Indonesia, local dialects, English, and even Dutch or Arabic echoes from the country’s rich historical layers.

But Indonesia’s cultural wealth doesn’t stop at language. As I shared stories and experiences, what captivated our fellow representatives most was the nature of the people. Indonesian hospitality goes beyond politeness—there is a gentle warmth and openness that embraces you like family. Whether in the bustling streets of Jakarta or the quiet shores of Flores, you will find people who listen with empathy and speak with soft-hearted sincerity.

After the meeting, we gathered for one last souvenir photo—a cherished LEX Hippo tradition. Some members had left early and missed the frame, but the spirit of the moment lingered. Later, on my way home, something caught my eye at a local Starbucks: the Komodo Dragon Blend coffee beans. It was my first time trying it. The taste, bold yet smooth, reminded me of the Indonesian character itself—strong, deep, but approachable.

In many ways, this simple coffee blend symbolized what we aim to explore through our upcoming journey: a land of hidden strengths and gentle wisdom. From the mystic aura of Bali to the untamed beauty of Komodo, Indonesia is not just a destination. It is a dialogue between cultures, a classroom without walls, and a warm hand reaching across the globe.

As we continue preparing for our end-of-year trip, we invite more members to join this cross-cultural experience—not as tourists, but as learners, friends, and future storytellers. Because when cultures meet not to compare, but to connect, we discover that our differences are not barriers—but bridges.
