Lex Hippo Family Club: A Unique Space for Self-Actualization
By; Ali Syarief
Lex Hippo Family Club is a unique non-governmental organization (NGO), perhaps the only one of its kind in the world. Not only has it endured, but it has also continued to grow and be cherished by its ever-expanding community. This phenomenon raises an intriguing question: Why is this the case? One key factor lies in its emphasis on self-actualization.
A personal experience that reinforced this perspective was when I had the opportunity to attend the “Mongolian Concert” in Tokyo. I was initially amazed by the performance of The Amarbayal Family, a talented Mongolian artistic family delivering a captivating show. However, what surprised me even more was when, during the intermission, children from the Hippo Family were given the chance to take the stage. Remarkably, the audience welcomed them with the same level of enthusiasm and joy.

This moment offered a profound reflection. In such an environment, it became impossible to compare which performance was better—the Amarbayal Family or the Hippo children—because both were received with equal admiration. This demonstrated that appreciation was not solely reserved for technical expertise but also for the courage and opportunity each individual had to express themselves.
This philosophy is at the heart of the Hippo Family Club. The organization consistently provides an equal platform for all its members, regardless of age or gender. There are no restrictions on who may perform or participate. From young children to adults, every member is given the same chance to showcase their abilities in various activities, from artistic performances to cultural exchanges.
This concept fosters an inclusive and supportive environment where individuals feel valued and are encouraged to develop their potential. In this context, self-actualization is not just about personal achievement but also about growing within a community that nurtures and uplifts one another.
What happens within Hippo Family Club proves that when a community offers its members the freedom to grow without rigid social constraints, the bonds formed become stronger. Members do not merely see themselves as part of an organization but as part of a larger family that supports one another.
This is what makes the Hippo Family Club so unique and continually thriving. It is not just an ordinary NGO but a space where members can realize their full potential, discover their identity, and share joy with others. In an increasingly competitive and individualistic world, the Hippo Family Club stands as an example of how a community can flourish through openness, inclusivity, and the recognition of every individual’s worth.
