Returning to Tokyo: A Journey That Always Warms the Heart

By Ali Syarief

This time, I embark once again on a journey to Tokyo—for the 31st time. To some, this number may seem extraordinary, but for me, this trip is far more than just another vacation. My purpose in visiting Japan isn’t to see Mount Fuji, visit temples, or experience the thrill of the Shinkansen. Japan, to me, is not just a destination—it is a second home, filled with warmth and friendship.

Each journey to Japan has one central goal: reconnecting with friends. I am not just a passing tourist, snapping photos and returning home with only visual memories. Instead, I return to continue conversations momentarily paused by distance and time. The more we talk, the stronger our bonds become. There is no awkwardness, only a deepening curiosity, new stories unfolding, and laughter that fills the air.

There is something truly heartwarming about friendships that transcend cultures. We come from different backgrounds, shaped by distinct values and traditions, yet in our differences, we find harmony. Our conversations never run dry—ranging from social issues and life philosophies to lighthearted discussions about favorite foods and unique habits in our respective countries. The world feels richer and more expansive when we have friends in different corners of the globe.

Of course, no trip is complete without indulging in culinary delights. Japan is a paradise for food lovers, and each visit presents a new gastronomic adventure. Whether it’s savoring a warm cup of matcha in a tiny Kyoto teahouse, relishing an authentic bowl of ramen in Tokyo, or simply engaging in long conversations over delicious local dishes, food is more than just sustenance—it is a bridge to understanding culture and everyday life.

With every journey, I am reminded that the world is more than just geographical borders. We are all connected through human relationships, through the stories we share, and through the experiences we live together. Tokyo is no longer just a place—it is an integral part of my life’s journey, colored with countless moments of warmth and connection. And of course, I know this will not be my last visit.
